Fed up with the metro

The residents of council-owned Markville flats in First Avenue, Springs CBD, have had enough with the Ekurhuleni Metro's alleged ignorance of caring for the residents.

The residents complain rent is being increased annually by 10% and claim this shouldn’t be higher than 25% of their monthly income.

Some of the residents, who rely on a state pension, are barely able to make ends meet after they have paid for their accommodation.

Danie Woest, one of the residents, feels the metro needs to inform residents about the increase in advance and not just add the 10% without notification.

He says he was three months in arrears, which is difficult to catch up.

Other residents, however, claim a notice was put on the notice board next to the lift to inform residents of a meeting about the increase of rent between the metro and residents.

Another resident, Marietjie Schalkwyk, is concerned that water is being wasted at the flats.

She says the metro workers clean the courtyard and foyer of the building and waste a lot of water doing so.

“It is water going to waste unnecessarily,” she says.

Schalkwyk feels every South African citizen has a responsibility towards themselves and others to save water or use it sparingly.

She is well aware that she is only a resident and is not allowed to get involved with the metro workers.

However, she did ask one of the workers to sweep the floors instead of rinsing it with water, but claims she was told to it is their job.

“The metro tells us to use water sparingly but they inform their employees to use water by cleaning the courtyard and foyer of a building” she adds.

No comment was received from the metro at the time of going to press.
