Demolition nears completion

The demolition of the old Driehoek Spar building is expected to be complete by the end of of October.

Front end loaders and large drilling machines have been busy at the site over the past few weeks.

“Several people stopped at the scene to thank us for demolishing the building,” says Gert Parsons from the Springs Afriforum branch.

The building, which has been vacant for five years, was used by vagrants, prostitutes and drug dealers.

It also became an illegal dumping site, which became an eyesore for the community and businesses in the vicinity.

The Springs branch of Afriforum raised their concern about the building with the Ekurhuleni Metro about two years ago, and expected the metro to take immediate action to have the building demolished.

According to Parsons, however, no action was taken by the metro and Afriforum stepped in.

The action to demolish the dilapidated building was welcomed by the community and local businesses.

Parsons says it took them less than two months to demolish the building.

“We will have the building rubble removed as soon as possible,” he adds.
