Metro addresses concerns regarding wheelie bins

Confusion is spreading among residents regarding the new wheelie bin system.

Last month, Themba Gadebe, spokesman for the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, said that the wheelie bin system will be in effect from October 1.

This included not collecting any refuse bags not placed in a wheelie bin.

The metro rolled out the 240 litre bin system as it is much more hygienic than the bag system.

“Bags will only be removed if they have been placed in the bins. Residents can have more than one bin but will be levied per bin as indicated on the rates account,” says Gadebe.

He adds that Waste Management Services is still experiencing breakdowns of vehicles which creates daily backlogs, but that the service is currently on schedule.

“In the event that a bin is stolen, the residents need to get an affidavit from the police station and the bin will be replaced at no cost to the resident.”

Some residents have taken it upon themselves to remove their own refuse by taking it to the nearest dumping site, but still have to pay the monthly levy on the account.

“The refuse levy is not only for the removal of the refuse but also includes other costs like land filling cost, removal of dead animals, litter picking services and the removal of illegal dumping,” says Gadebe.

He concludes by saying: “The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality’s Waste Management by-laws indicate that Waste Management Services are responsible for the removal and collection of household refuse and business refuse.”
