Owner ordered to clean up neighbourhood eyesore
The state of an empty house in Uraan Street, Dersley, has been giving neighbours in the vicinity a headache for several months.
According to one of the neighbours, Bokkie Koekemoer (74), he filed a complaint with the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality’s Health Department about six months ago.
“The swimming pool is half-filled with water due to the rain and there is also a rat infestation,” he says.
Koekemoer says a terrible stench emanates from the pool, which contains dead rats.
The metro‘s health department inspected the property six months ago and issued the owner a notice to clean it up and deal with the rat infestation.
According to Koekemoer, however, it was never done.
A follow-up inspection was recently conducted by officials from the health department.
“It is difficult to access the premises to conduct a detailed inspection as it is extensively secured with a high fence and sliding gate which is locked,” says Themba Gadebe, metro spokesman.
They could only observe the state of the house through the front gate and across the wall from a neighbouring premises.
“A final statutory notice will be served on the owner to address the nuisance conditions,” he says.
