Tommy conquers river race

Springs resident Tommy Booth took on the technically challenging Lowveld Crocodile River during the recent N4 Trac Lowveld Crocodile K1 River Race.

This is the only triple A rated river race that falls under the Gauteng calendar of races.

According to Jennie Dallas, from the Gauteng Canoe Union, Tommy successfully shot over the huge drop at the number 14 rapid.

He is a member of the Ekurhuleni Kayak Club in Benoni.

With a water release from the Kwena Dam, the river flows with a fast downhill gradient towards Nelspruit around the contours of the mountains and through the valleys of Schoemanskloof.

Jennie says numerous rocky rapids, steep drops and sharp tight corners with huge boulders scattered across the narrow river, provided a spectacular and scenic challenge for experienced white water river racers.

The river is famous for its reputation of not having any flat water stretches in between rapids.

Tommy finished in a time of five hours and 11 minutes over the two days, covering a distance of 30km on both days.

He says he is looking forward to next year’s race.
