Robber dies during robbery

An EMPD official was shot during a house robbery that took place in Rhokana Avenue, Selcourt, on Monday.

Three suspects gained access to the house at 2.30am, waking up the owner of the house,

Springs police spokesman Capt Johannes Ramphora says the suspects were armed and that one of them pointed a gun at the victim.

The suspects tied up the victim with cable ties.

They took electrical appliances and loaded them into the victim’s Mercedes Benz Vito.

An EMPD official drove past the scene and noticed the vehicle and the suspects.

Ramphora says the suspects shot at the official, wounding him.

During a shoot-out between the suspects and the official, one suspect was shot and killed.

“Two of the suspects got away,” says Ramphora.

When the police arrived at the scene, they called for an ambulance and assisted the victim in the house.

Paramedics declared the suspect dead at the scene.

They treated the injured EMPD official at the scene and transported him to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

EMPD spokesman Clifford Shongwe confirms that one of their officials was shot during the robbery, but cannot reveal further information.

A case of house robbery and attempted murder was opened at the police station.
