Gun haul, drugs and cash seized by EMPD

Two EMPD Equestrian Unit officials spotted a suspected drug deal taking place along Cemetery Road, Geduld, on Monday.

The two officials, Constables Graham Allen and Quinton Pretorius, arrested two men aged 24 and 42 years old.

The officials were on a routine crime prevention patrol at 8am, when they noticed a parked red Mercedes Benz.

EMPD spokesman Clifford Shongwe says the officials saw a white Hyundai stopping next to the red car and the occupants exchanging something.

The EMPD officers turned around and stopped at the scene but the white car had already driven off.

They found two suspects in the vehicle and ordered them to step out of the car.

They searched the suspects and found Cat and dagga with a street value of about R500 on the suspects.

Shongwe says the officials then noticed the two suspects were wearing security uniforms and were armed.

When they opened the boot of the car, they found a pump action shotgun strapped to the back seat of the car.

The suspects allegedly claimed that this firearm, as well as a 9mm pistol with seven rounds of live ammunition, a 38. special revolver with six rounds of live ammunition and a gas gun belongs to the company for whom they work.

Two boxes of 31 rounds of shotgun ammunition were also found in their possession.

Upon checking the serial numbers of the firearms, it was found that none of the firearms were registered in the suspects’ names.

“The two suspects also had three knives and about R52 000 in their possession,” says Shongwe.

Police have since established that the 9mm pistol was reported stolen in September 2004.

Two signal jamming devices, an old SAPS badge and a wallet were also discovered in the vehicle.

Shongwe says one suspects can possibly be linked to another crime.

Springs police spokesman Amanda Greybe says not even the car was registered in either suspect’s name.

The vehicle was taken to the SAPS Van Ryn Deep Pound in Benoni.

The suspects were taken to the Springs Police Station and face charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, possession of stolen firearm, possession of drugs and possession of dangerous weapons.

They will appear in court soon.
