The security and workers, demolishing the buildings at the shaft, notified the Springs SAPS about the four bodies they discovered when they arrived at work at 8am.
Two of the four dead men were lying next to each other, while the other two were lying within 500m of each other.
Springs police spokesman Capt Johannes Ramphora says one of the men was assaulted and full of bruises with a bullet wound in his chest.
The other three bodies each had a single bullet wound to the chest.
Ramphora says the police believe another group of illegal miners recruited the four deceased to mine for them overnight.
The miners surfaced this morning and were allegedly killed by the group of miners they were recruited by.
The four men are believed to be between 25 and 30 years of age.
