Seniors enjoy stimulation programme

The Department of Social Development in conjunction with occupational therapists from the Far East Rand Hospital offered a stimulation programme to Ekurhuleni Metro housing residents on Friday.

Not all of the residents attended due to the cold weather but those who did, thoroughly enjoyed the event.

The programme started off with dancing exercises.

The hosts were looking for someone who was really enjoying the exercise and putting everything into the dance moves.

Dorothy Vlassapoulos (81) and Johan Opperman (63) won prizes for best dancing effort.

The dancing was followed by a round of bingo where Richard Ferreira (63) won a full house prize and Nicky Vlassapoulos (84)won a prize for a full row.

A presentation was held concentrating on constructive use of leisure time.

“It is important that senior citizens make use of their leisure time, not only through exercises, but by keeping themselves busy mentally and physically,” says Annerie Ferreira, a social worker from the Department of Social Development.

She put the emphasis on brain stimulation using crosswords and card playing as an example.

“Even if they just tap their legs to the rhythm of the music,” she adds.

The two organisations are grateful to those who sponsored the water, cold drinks, muffins and prizes.

Annerie says they host these events twice a year and will focus on audiology in the new year.

Trudie Scheepers (70) says she enjoyed the programme and think it’s a wonderful idea.

Tinus (68) and his wife Rina Nieuhoff (63) had a ball during the dancing exercise and can’t wait for next year’s programme.
