UPDATE: Details of Dersley liquor store robbery emerge

Springs police have watched the CCTV footage from the robbery of a Dersley liquor store in which local businessman George Panayi (66) was shot and killed.

It was previously reported that a gang of five armed men entered the store in Cloverfield Road, on Wednesday, at 12.15pm, but police have revealed that seven men were involved, two of whom were armed.

Springs police spokesman Capt Johannes Ramphora says the footage shows the robbers arrived in a white Corsa.

“Three suspects entered the shop and took a man and two women to the back of the store,” he says.

Four more suspects entered, followed by Panayi.

Ramphora says there was a struggle between Panayi and one of the armed suspects, who then shot and killed him.

Paramedics later declared Panayi dead on the scene.

The seven suspects left the store with alcohol and fled the scene at a leisurely pace in the Corsa.

“They were not in a panic when they drove off,” says Ramphora.

It is a difficult time for the Panayi family.

According to the deceased’s son, Basil Panayi (40), they couldn’t have asked for a better father.

“He was a great man who lived for his family and taught us everything,” he says.

Basil adds family meant everything to his father.

A case of business robbery and murder was opened at the Spring Police Station.
