Durban resident abandons child in Geduld

Lindile Kubeka (38), who abandoned her two-month-old baby earlier this year, was sentenced in the Springs Regional Court on Saturday.

She was found guilty of child neglect and was sentenced to seven years imprisonment, five of which were suspended.

Springs police spokesman Capt Johannes Ramphora says Kubeko resides in Durban and came to Springs to abandon her infant in front of the gate of a house in Geduld in February.

Police were informed of the discovery of the baby and took the child to hospital for a check up.

The SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offence Unit (FCS) investigated the case and the mother was arrested on August 4, in Geduld.

The FCS worked tirelessly to solve this case and the baby is still in a nearby hospital.

Ramphora says the baby is being kept at the hospital as the Department of Social Development is investigating whether the mother is fit to look after the child.
