Foodbank officially launched in Springs

A new foodbank for Springs was officially launched at the Springs Fresh Produce Market on Friday.

The initiative started out as a pilot project in September 2014.

Lindiwe Mbele, who works with both the Economic Development Department and the Springs Fresh Produce Market on the Foodbank project, says they first had to establish how viable the project would be and communicated with Non-Profit Organisations (NPO) in the area.

“The NPOs have a certificate from the Department of Social Development which is used to register to receive food from the Foodbank,” Mbele said.

She added that several NPOs from Springs, Etwatwa, Daveyton and Duduza have already registered at the Foodbank.

“We are also introducing more NPOs to continue with the registration process and we are working hand in hand with social workers who know the community and their needs the best”.

Registered NPOs will receive fresh produce on a weekly basis which they then use and distribute to people in need.
