Sewer water rising in man’s (87) yard

An 87-year-old resident fears that his property, where he lives, alone may soon be filled with sewage water.

Migiel Potgieter says the manhole in his back yard has been slowly filling up with sewage water over the past three weeks and he fears the probability that his yard may soon be flooded with the water.

“It already has a bad stench, can you imagine how it will smell if this starts overflowing?” he asks.

Potgieter also thinks that it could be a health hazard as the water is filthy and filled with bacteria.

He adds that he suspects the main pipe has been blocked, pushing the sewage water out of the manhole.

“Not only that, but the water meter in front of my house is filled with water as well.”

He has been struggling for many months to get the situation of the water meter sorted.

“My questions is, how do they take the reading of the water meter if it is completely under water?”

Potgieter has lived alone in the house since his wife died two years ago.

He and his wife built the house more than 30 years ago and he says this is the reason he knows where the main pipe is and that he thinks it is blocked.

The Addie is awaiting comment from the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality.
