Metro warns against fraudsters

Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality warns residents against fraudulent metro employees.

Following an article published by the Addie (Fraudster poses as Ekurhuleni employee), the metro responded swiftly to alert business owners and residents.

Business owners in Springs CBD were recently victims of a swindler who said he is from Ekurhuleni and that their electrical box was damaged andhe needed to replace it.

The unsuspecting owners supplied him with the money he said he needed to fix it but they never saw him again.

Themba Gadebe, spokesman for Ekurhuleni Metro, says they were not aware of the matter.

“We would like to warn residents not to permit anyone who claims to be from the municipality to access their properties, unless this person can provide positive identification in the form of a municipal card and name badge,” he says.

He also adds that employees can be recognised by wearing clearly identifiable municipal outfits.

More importantly, Gadebe says no official is allowed to take money from residents.

“That is the biggest sign that you are dealing with a conman.”

The metro only accepts money at the Customer Care Centre tellers and the licensing centres.

“No one will ever be requested to pay cash on site,” he said.

The metro urges residents to be cautious.

“The municipality will always communicate with residents when there is a need to access their properties.”
