Water meter stolen, water flows freely

Water flowed freely down Second Street in Springs CBD on Wednesday for almost nine hours.

Tommy Singh, a dispatch manager at one of the businesses in Second Street, says the water meter outside their business was stolen and was the cause for the massive water leak.

“The manhole where the meter is has been open for more than a year and I have reported it multiple times to Ekurhuleni Metro,” he says.

Singh says that they only ever came to take notes, but nothing was done to cover it and they then decided to cover it with a wooden board as it was on the side walk and very dangerous to pedestrians.

On the Addie’s arrival at the leak, the metro also arrived and assessed the damage, saying that a contractor has to install a new meter, but that they will attempt to temporarily fix it.

Until the new meter is installed, the business will be without water.

Singh says the water was spraying out from 6am until 2.30pm when the metro arrived, despite multiple phone calls to the metro early in the morning.

He adds that they also had to cover the electric box on the lamppost outside their premises as various calls to have the open wires fixed, were in vain.

“We taped it shut with duct tape as the live wires were sticking out and this could also have been very dangerous.”

The Addie is awaiting comment from Ekurhuleni.
