Welgedacht in dire need of traffic lights

Residents of Welgedacht are faced with the everyday struggle of extreme traffic.

There is only one entry and exit to Welgedacht, along First Avenue, and all residents are forced to come to a standstill during peak hour traffic – mornings and afternoons – at the crossing.

Residents have now signed a petition for the Ekurhuleni Metro to erect traffic lights at the intersection of First Avenue and Welgedacht Road.

Thabiso Aphane (27), a resident of the area, says there have been many serious accidents at this crossing since January, including a fatality.

“Every crossing on this road has a robot, except for us,” he says.

“This is probably one of the busiest intersections and we need a robot.”

He adds they are all loyal ratepayers but feel the suburb is forgotten and there is no reason for them to be neglected.

“Many motorists speed along Welgedacht Road and some do not stop at the stop street, I don’t think they realise how dangerous this is,” he says.

“All we ask is for the metro to provide us with a robot and for them to grasp the seriousness of this issue.”

The Addie is awaiting a response from the Ekurhuleni Metro.
