Clubs enjoy a day of grappling

The Rio Grappling Club in Springs held a grappling competition on Saturday at Hoërskool Hugenote.

It was the third competition held by Jurgen Putter from the club.

Putter plans to hold the competition once a month.

On Saturday, seven other clubs from across the East Rand participated in Pride Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, which is offered by the Rio Grappling Club.

There were also clubs from Polokwane and even Nelspruit, as well as various professional mixed martial art fighters present.

Jiu-jitsu focuses on submission holds and locks and is described as a form of “human chess” due to its various technical aspects.

According to Jurgen, it is currently one of the fastest growing form of martial arts in the world and is practiced by special forces and police officers from around the world for its effectiveness in self defence.

Participants of all ages, from four to 44, were present and took part in the competition.

There were around 70 participants all in all.

“It was a very successful day and we are planning to host another tournament in August,” Jurgen concludes.

Entry is free and everyone is welcome.
