Tihan performs well in CMaths

Tihan van Rooyen (12) recently took second place at the annual CMaths National Championships held in Midrand.

He was also chosen to represent South Africa at the Japan Soroban training camp in August.

This Grade Six learner from Laerskool Selection Park is currently on seventh achievement level (Kyu) in Soroban education and will soon be starting with his sixth level.

CMaths, also known as Soroban (Abacus) Education and Mental Arithmetic System (SEMAS), is aimed at children aged between three and 11 years.

The training focuses on the children’s mathematical skills, their memory, concentration, speed reading and gives an insight to the fine motor movement of the brain.

Tihani van Rooyen, Tihan‘s mother, says he needed to complete difficult mathematic challenges at the competition, on the Abacus, in a set time limit.

During the challenges, contestants had to add, substract, divide, multiply and even complete decimal sums.

Tihan is looking forward to the next challenge which will be held in July, where he can qualify for an international event which will be held in San Francisco, USA, in December.
