Mayor wants a university in Ekurhuleni

"The greatest challenges we face in our nation today is to conquer poverty, homelessness, illiteracy and ignorance."

These were the words of Ekurhuleni mayor Clr Mondli Gungubele at the monthly council meeting held in Germiston on Thursday (June 25).

“As a city, we believe that a lot of opportunities exist for young people in the area of township economies,” he says.

“In this regard, a process to develop a comprehensive township economy development strategy is already complete.”

He stated that the fight against unemployment and poverty eradication remains resolute through the establishment of strategic working relationships with various social partners.

The mayor says he cannot comprehend the fact that a city with over three million people, still does not have a university.

“I would be failing in my duty if I did not flag the fact that there is no university in Ekurhuleni, which happens to be the economic hub of the continent and still does not have an institution of higher learning,” he says.

He believes now is the time to prioritise and elevate the matter.

“We either have to turn to the private sector to build such a facility in the region or engage the existing universities to open satellites in our space,” he says.

Council then started with their ordinary council meeting and started discussing the matter of a proposed caravan park in Springs.

A request was put in for the approval of rezoning a portion of municipal land in Daggafontein to create the park.

The request must comply with various conditions before council approves.

“As we close Youth Month, we welcome Mandela Month. Let us use the month of July to make a difference to those less fortunate,” Gungubele concludes.
