Two Springs schools don’t have enough toilets for learners

The Department of Education (GDE) recently conducted a survey with regard to the number of toilets available in all schools across Gauteng.

The number of toilets per school in the Gauteng East district to the ratio of learners per toilet ranges from 4 to one, to 79 to one.

It was revealed that one primary school in Springs has a ratio of 79 learners per toilet, while a local high school has a ratio of 71 learners per toilet.

Gauteng Department of Education spokesman Phumla Sekhonyane says in terms of the regulations relating to the minimum uniform norms and Standards for Public School Infrastructure, a school with an enrollment of approximately 1 000 learners should have toilets at a ratio of 50 to one.

“This ratio varies and is dependent on the enrollment of the school,” she adds.

Except for the two schools, all others primary and high schools in Springs fall well within the acceptable ratio range.

Sekhonyane says the regulations also determine that all schools with insufficient number of toilets should be prioritised.

The primary and high school affected in Springs have been added to the GDE’s priority list.
