Springs Extension residents without electricity for 28 hours

Residents of Springs Extension were without electricity for 28 hours last week.

The area was without electricity from 7.30am last Tuesday, until 11.30am the following day.

Resident Trudy van Zyl (70), who lives in Broad Street, says she phoned the Ekurhuleni Metro and was told it was not load shedding.

“If it wasn’t load shedding, then what was it?” says van Zyl.

She says residents could find nothing wrong at the nearby substation.

On top of this, van Zyl says residents have a never-ending struggle with illegal dumping in the street, which no one will take responsibility for and which is never cleaned.

“The house across the road from us burned down on Saturday evening, and as a result of the dumping, the fire hydrant could not be used as it was completely covered with rubbish, so they had to use the one further down the street to extinguish the blaze,” she says.

The rubbish is dumped all along the railway tracks which pass van Zyl’s property.

“That is also never cleaned and it’s getting really bad, this used to be one of the cleanest areas in Springs and it’s horrible to see it go downhill this way,” she adds.

The Addie is awaiting comment from the metro.
