Booth does it again

The K1 and K2 canoe championships were held on Saturday and Sunday at the Homestead Dam in Benoni.

Springsite Tommy Booth, from the East Rand Kayak Canoe Club, raced in the senior category, which ranges from the age of 24 to 34, and finished in second place in the single, K1 championship on Saturday.

He finished the 29km race with a time of 2:29.

In the K2 championship on Sunday, Tommy partnered with Jarryd Breeds, also from the East Rand Kayak Canoe Club, and finished in third place with a time of 2:24.

Jennie Dallas, spokesman for the Gauteng Canoe Union, says he did very well seeing as the senior category is the toughest category to be in.

“It’s a very tough age group to race in as some of the strongest competitors are in this group,” she says.

The championship was held to identify the best Gauteng teams for the SA Marathon championships in KwaZulu-Natal during June.

Gautengers lined up for a great day of racing and training over long distances, with portages to improve fitness and endurance.
