There’s still time to register for school

Parents who want to apply for their children to get admission into public schools for the 2016 academic year only have a few days left before admissions close.

Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) spokesman Phumla Sekhonyane says even though parents can register their children online, they still need to go to the schools to submit proof of residence and other necessary documentation.

This electronic application system allows parents to apply using a web-based computer or a smart phone, which can be done from the area of convenience of the applicant.

Limited space is available within a school and the department encourages applicants to apply early so that they can secure a space for their children.

“The responsibility rests with the applicant,” says Sekhonyane.

If an application is made after the deadline, the chances of not getting a space at your school of choice are high.

It is important to note that the admissions process caters for both the web and manual applications.

Sekhonyane says parents who do not have access to the internet can apply at the school of their choice.

Online registration is safe as it gives applicant a reference number which is equivalent to a waiting list number.

The system cannot be manipulated in anyway as the parents will have to submit proof of address to the school after registering online.

The web application has recently been activated to coincide with manual submissions, in order to make the process fair for all parents.

She says schools will admit learners based on the number of spaces available.

Parents just need to register online at www.gdeadmissions.gov.za and then apply.

Admissions close on May 26.
