Full house at bingo fundraiser

A bingo fundraiser was held for Potters Haven on Friday at the Springscare Community Centre.

R500 in cash, R1 500 meal voucher from a local restaurant and various other prizes donated by private individuals were up for grabs at the event.

Cheryl Havenga, treasurer for Potters Haven, says the fundraiser was held to assist the home, which is in financial trouble.

Marlene and Andrew Minnie are caring for 27 children who need to attend school.

“They are doing phenomenal work with these children, but times are tough,” says Havenga.

“One needs to remember that these children need to be clothed, fed and enrolled in school, as they arrive with nothing but the clothes on their backs.”

She adds that Potters Haven is a registered Public Benefit Organisation (PBO), Non-profit Organisation (NPO) and a foster home.

“With only the bare necessities, such as food, clothes and schooling, the budget for Potters Haven each month is R52 000, of which R26 000 is received through donations.

“We have to find a way to come up with the rest of the R26 000, which gets really difficult.”

Andrew Minnie works for the Springscare Centre and his entire salary goes to the home to help with the finances.

“We need regular monthly contributions like this to help these children,” says Havenga.

She explains that there are facilities available for debit orders and that all information is kept strictly confidential.

“Any donations are welcome, such as clothes, food, prepaid electricity etc. Anything helps.”

The children of Potters Haven are active in various community projects and help where they can.

“We try to make them as community-orientated as possible so that, in a way, they can give back to the community.”
