Karate motivates Gerard

Gerard Williams (75) is much younger than his age implies.

The septuagenarian was recently graded as a fourth Dan in JKA Shotokan Karate.

The karateka used to take his daughter Saranne Williams (32) to karate classes when she was younger, and watch her practice.

He soon joined the Springs Dojo of the Michael Roetz Karate Institute, and believes sensei Michael Roetz is a first-class instructor.

“Michael is my role model because of his determination and the fact that he lives for karate,” says Gerard.

He believes he has learned a lot from the sixth Dan sensei, and is still learning.

Although he is a Benoni resident, Gerard travels to Springs twice a week to practice with the rest of the students.

Michael has known Gerard for more than 15 years.

“He assists me with the warm up during practice and I admire him for his people skills,” says Michael.

Despite his age, Gerard is still a strong competitor.

He moved up the karate ranks quickly, and 19 years ago received his first Dan.

This was followed by his second Dan two years later, and his third in 2003.

The biggest highlight of his karate career is when he received his fourth Dan in November, in Johannesburg.

Gerard is enjoying his retirement after closing his business in Benoni, in February.

He is extremely active and barely has time to relax, but does enjoy watching the odd soccer game on TV.
