Open spaces turned to rubbish dumps

Ndamase Street in Bakerton is strewn with litter and rubbish.

Ward councillor Ramesh Sheodin says that illegal dumping in this area has been going on for a long time and he does not know what to do any more.

“The whole place is a rubbish dump,” he states.

“It’s the shop owners that dump all their rubbish here on one spot, and even if it gets cleaned up, in a week’s time it just looks like this again.”

He gets numerous calls on a daily basis about the state of the area where the illegal dumping takes place.

“There are a lot of these illegal dumping places, which the metro needs to look at.”

Sheodin adds they are hard at work identifying the people responsible and have valid leads.

“When we find the people who are doing this, we will issue them with a final written warning, and if they still do not adhere to the warning, they will receive a fine of R2 000.”
