EMPD and metro working together

Walkways are for pedestrians and not traders.

The Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) cleaned up Fifth Avenue, Springs central business district last Wednesday.

EMPD spokesman, Wilfred Kgasago, says the operation conducted by the EMPD by-laws unit, who cleaned the area near the banks to prevent crime, warned the street traders previously that trading in Fifth Street is illegal.

There is also a no trading sign visible, which the traders seem to ignore.

He claimed the operation was aimed at clearing the walkways.

“We also want to ensure that compliance with the municipal by-laws are observed,” he says.

EMPD officials were accompanied by metro workers and a metro truck was also on standby to assist with the loading of the seized goods.

Although DVDs, CDs, handbags, bangles, belts, shoes and vegetables were seized, the illegal traders took off and no arrests were made.
