Unhappy landfill site contractors

Tension prevails among the weighbridge contractors at the Rietfontein Landfill Site.

The current contractors are unhappy about the situation at the site because they have to train metro employers.

They believe these metro workers are going to take over their work when their contract expires at the end of the month.

The situation arose when metro workers arrived at the weighbridge last Monday.

In the meantime, the Ekurhuleni says these metro workers at the weighbridge are only observers.

These observers will take permanent positions at the site after the current external contract expires.

The contact workers feel the metro could have given them permanent employment because they already have the skills.

But these claims were refuted by Eugene Hlongwane, the metro’s acting head of landfill.

He says an advertisement was placed in newspapers at the beginning of December where anyone had the opportunity to apply for these open positions.

Hlongwane says the metro decided to exclude the weighbridge from the new contracts, due to financial reasons.
