Minor repairs done at Transnet centre

Work to repair the dilapidated Transnet Springs Community Centre in Bakerton started last week.

The building needs repairs after residents of Gugulethu/Everest informal settlements set the place alight during service delivery protests in May.

The office of site manager Peter Pelele, which is a container, has been fitted with new window panes and a door.

The people at the centre were relieved that they could use the toilets again, but it was only for a short while as it is now blocked.

Nomvula Ndabaninzi, a general worker at the centre, says it seems to be a blocked sewage pipe. Pelele says he is also relieved that things are moving in the right direction as far as service delivery is concerned.

He emphasised that it will not be business as usual at the centre but they can at least work with some level of comfort.

Major repairs, where the centre will receive a complete facelift, are expected to commence in January and the centre is expected to be fully operational again in March,
