School clothes can be costly

Start by buying the basics.

Budget now for your child’s school clothes for the new year.

Upon investigation, the Addie found that every school has its own supplier of school clothes and the prices we supply is a guideline.

A supplier of school clothes, Jill Buissinne advises parents of girls to buy the basics – two school dresses or skirts or culottes, a short sleeved jersey, a long sleeved jersey and a drymac.

Depending on the school, these items alone will cost between R700 and R900 for a Grade One girl and R600 and R800 for a Grade Eight girl.

Schoolboys, especially the Grade Ones also need a short sleeved jersey, a long sleeved jersey, a drymac and school badges, costing about R600 for Grade Ones and R450 for Grade Eights.

Depending on the school, boys and sometimes girls, have to get a white, blue or grey shirt, which costs between R85 and R130 each depending on the size and shop where you buy it.

School shoes cost around R189 for Grade One boys and R179 for Grade One girls.

For a size five it costs R220 for a unisex type and R199 for girls’ shoes.

Buissinne says it is optional for a Grade One learner to get a blazer, which can cost up to R450 and R550 for the Grade Eights.

Nadine Scott, another supplier of school clothes says a Grade One boy’s pants will cost around R50 and R140.

The school socks will cost about R25 each, the school emblem that has to be sewn on the white, grey or blue shirts, costs R20 and a school tie, R30.

There are also options of beanies (R20), a scarf (R30) and gloves (R10).
