Fireworks vs Rules and Regulations

I thank the Advertiser for their article on keeping animals safe from fireworks (October 30, 2014).

They published the rules and regulations, fines and permissions related to the setting off of fireworks in a residential area as well as disturbing the peace and how this traumatises animals within the area.

However, this brings my point of concern.

In the week of October 23 and 24, fireworks were set off for three evenings for around six hours per night.

There were loud “bombs” going off without respite during the times and dates mentioned.

I investigated the source of the noise and found out that it emanated from the residential area of Bakerton.

I reside close to the area of Rowhill and these “bombs” were audible within my house.

My animals were badly traumatised for all of these nights and my peace was also disturbed.

I feel sorry for all of these residents and their animals who reside in a residential area close to Bakerton.

The question is, who gave permission to set off the fireworks which sounded like bombs in a residential area and allow this to continue for three nights?

What about the noise disturbance and the poor traumatised animals within the noise radius.

There was no prior warning or request.

If animals run away and get hurt in any way during this time, who is responsible?

Who pays the SPCA? Who pays the vet?

The organisers should give a little consideration to the residents and their animals, who are affected the most.

After all, they are “God’s creatures”.

I don’t think this is the way to celebrate any event.

The law is not strict enough and should be monitored by the SAPS.

Fireworks must be banned.
