Aiki-Sambo in SA

The Aiki-Sambo seminar and workshop took place over the weekend at Henmar Place in Welgedacht and was the first of its kind in South Africa, according to Terence Terain, a karate instructor in Springs.

Kenji Nakawaza (65) from Japan created this new karate technique called Aiki-Sambo and also attended the seminar on invitation from Teraine.

Aiki-Sambo is a combination of Japanese Aikido and Russian Sambo.

Nakawaza has been doing Yoshinkan Aikido for 20 years and is now teaching this technique of fighting to his students in Japan.

He first came to South Africa in 2002 for a Yoshinkan Aikido seminar where he met Teraine.

Teraine and his wife, Suzette, have been trained by Nakawaza and have become the only registered Aiki-Sambo instructors who can train others in South Africa in this technique.

Guest instructors at the seminar were Sensei Gordon Douglas (karate), Sensei Otto Pretorius (Aikido) and James Reed (MMA trainer).

The Teraine’s will start Aiki-Sambo SA at their dojo.

“Aiki-Sambo means good training, good friendship and good technique,” says Teraine.
