Never-Never gets lights

Ekurhuleni Metro installed solar panels.

The people living in the informal settlement of Never-Never are excited about their new solar panels.

Ekurhuleni Metro installed these panels on Tuesday at over 100 homes in this informal settlement, which is situated off the Paul Kruger Highway.

The solar electricity unit consists of a portable solar panel, linked to a DC 12 volt battery.

Depending on where in the informal settlement the people live, they put these panels in the place they can get maximum sun.

Some, like Lowrence Makwakwa, has it installed on one wall of his house while others put it on their rooftops or at a sunny place close to their homes.

Makwakwa says this battery is strong enough to light up his four lights inside and outside his house.

The battery also has two USB-ports for charging electronic equipment, which he uses for his cell phone.

He says lights inside and outside his home will change his life for the better.

He says, as many other residents of this informal settlement he has, up to now, had to use a generator for lighting up his house, which amounted to R50 per day.

Candles, another way in getting light in his shack, was also getting expensive because candles that cost R4,50 each, only last two days.

He is excited about the idea that schoolchildren will now be able to study at night.

Lorna Sese, another resident, is very excited about the light inside her house.

She has to put the solar panel on her roof each day, but loves the idea of having lights inside her home.
