Metro pounces on speedsters

An average of eighteen drivers per week are arrested throughout the metro for exceeding the speed limit in the 80km/h zones.

The Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) on Wednesday and Thursday once again pounced on road users in Springs, Brakpan and Benoni that went too fast.

Senior superintendent Wilfred Kgasago, EMPD spokesman says an average of eighteen drivers per week are arrested throughout the metro for exceeding the speed limit in the 80km/h zones.

Six speedsters were nabbed on Wednesday morning in one of the EMPD’s speed monitoring operations on Welgedacht Road, between Grootvaly Road and 4th Avenue.

The six were caught doing speeds of between 104km/h and 97km/h in a 60km/h zone.

On Thursday morning nine drivers including a woman were nabbed doing speeds of between 132 and 116km/h along the R51 between N12 freeway and Modderbee roads, which is an 80km/h zone.

The EMPD also on Tuesday night caught ten drivers doing speeds ranging between 158 and 116km/h in Brakpan along R23 between Kaapmaiden and Dube Streets, an 80km/h zone.

All the arrested speedsters were released after posting bail of R1 000 each after being charged with reckless and negligent driving.
