Drowning of five-year-old boy sends shock waves through Welgedacht

The child's family was too traumatised to comment on the incident.

A five-year-old boy drowned in Welgedacht yesterday (Thursday) afternoon.

It is believed the boy was playing with friends in the backyard of his home when he fell into the swimming pool.

Paramedics declared the boy dead on the scene.

The police arrived and statements were taken from the relevant people.

The Addie was on the scene for two hours but the child’s mother, father and rest of the family were too traumatised to talk to the journalist.

On the Springs Advertiser’s facebook page Sheldon Richards, who was on the scene, commented on the incident saying the child apparently was in the water for 10 minutes before his body was discovered.

Richards was third on the scene and tried to resuscitate the child.

He says not even a six cycle CPR could save the child.

Richards described the child’s drowning as a freak accident and requested the community to comfort and assist the child’s family during these difficult times.

We will update the story as soon as more information is available.
