Professional cycling outfit, Team Abantu, remains stranded in a financial crisis and could be disbanded at the end of the season.

This was confirmed by team management on Monday, after squad member Nolan Hoffman earned his fourth win in five years at the Amashova Durban Classic at the weekend.

Spearheaded by Hoffman, the coastal outfit has also bagged the last two men’s titles at the prestigious Cape Town Cycle Tour.

“Unfortunately we have to live with the reality next year Team Abantu may not exist,” said Hoffman, a former world championships silver medallist on the track.

“It will be a big loss to the cycling community as this team led by (owner) Dean Edwards has contributed significantly to the development of young riders.”

The outfit had made a “desperate” plea to corporate SA in March, in an ongoing search for funding, but its future remained uncertain in the closing stages of the 2015 campaign.

“I’m not sure what lies ahead,” Hoffman said.

“There is always hope, but in the end it’s money that talks.”
