South Africans Reinardt Janse van Rensburg and Jay Thomson struggled in the elite men’s time trial in Tuscany, Italy, yesterday on the fourth day of the UCI Road World Championships.

Janse van Rensburg, who was 41st at last year’s global championships in Valkenburg, Netherlands, finished 42nd this time round, nearly six minutes off the pace of the leaders in the gruelling event.

The 24-year-old, who will turn out again in the elite men’s road race this weekend, completed the 57.9km course in one hour, 11 minutes, 29.39 seconds (1:11:29.39).

His countryman Jay Thomson finished more than a minute behind Janse van Rensburg in 55th position, of the 77 riders in the field.

German Tony Martin, above, won his third straight world title in 1:05:36.65, while Briton Bradley Wiggins secured the silver medal, 46.09 seconds off the pace, and Swiss rider Fabian Cancellara claimed bronze.
