Van Niekerk clocks world class 200m time

Following Wayde van Niekerk’s historic 19.94 performance in Lucerne on Tuesday night, becoming the first South African to break the 20-second barrier in the 200m dash, a total of eight SA records have now fallen in sprint events this season.

In the build-up to next month’s World Championships in Beijing, the nation’s fastest athletes continue to break new ground on the international circuit. ¬†Five speedsters have either equalled or broken national marks in distances ranging between 100m and 400m in the last two months.

Here is the list of SA sprint records which have fallen in Olympic disciplines this year:

Jobodwana – 200m, 20.04, Eugene (May 30)

Wayde van Niekerk – 400m, 44.24, New York (June 13)

Van Niekerk – 400m, 43.96, Paris (July 4)

Henricho Bruintjies – 100m, 9.97, La Chaux-de-Fonds (July 5)

Akani Simbine – 100m, 9.97, Gwangju (July 9)

Carina Horn – women’s 100m, 11.06, Madrid (July 11)
