Norwegian rider Edvald Boasson Hagen took 10th place for MTN-Qhubeka at the Milan-Sanremo cycle race in Italy on Sunday.

With two former winners in the squad – Gerald Ciolek of Germany (2013) and Matt Goss of Australia (2011) – the South African outfit had targeted victory at the UCI World Tour event.

While they were unable to regain the title won by Ciolek two years ago, however, they did put up a fight.

Belgian rider Serge Pauwels led an early break which was chased down by the peloton, while Ciolek was ruled out of the race after being involved in a crash in the closing stages.

Boasson Hagen, a former World Championships silver medallist and three-time Grand Tour stage winner, crossed the line a few metres behind German winner John Degenkolb (Team Giant-Alpecin), who covered the 293km race in 6:46.16, in a bunch sprint.

“I didn’t do a great sprint but I was happy to still secure a top 10,” Boasson Hagen said.

“Serge did a really good job to be up in the front and it helped us in not having to chase from behind.”
