Former Australian national coach Norma Plummer believes the SA team can reach the semifinals at the Netball World Cup for the first time in 20 years.

Plummer, brought in by Netball SA as a consultant to newly appointed national coach Bennie Saayman, was speaking on Tuesday on the sidelines of a two-week training camp in Pretoria.

“They have the ability to reach the top four but they will need to play intelligent netball and be tactically and technically smart,” said Plummer, who guided the Australians to victory at the 2011 global spectacle in Singapore.

“If they can reach the top four, on any given day anything can happen.”

Saayman, appointed last month as a replacement for Elize Kotze who stepped down for personal reasons, was pleased to see the progress of the team during their first camp under her tenure.

“It’s a privilege to have Norma here. She’s doing such good work with our girls,” Saayman said.

“She’s brought a new dimension and we’re seeing a higher intensity from them in practice games.”

South Africa have not reached the semifinals at the Netball World Cup since securing a silver medal at the 1995 showpiece in Birmingham.

They have been drawn against Malawi, Singapore and Sri Lanka in Pool C for the quadrennial tournament, to be played in Sydney in August.
