SA elite named in African athletics team

The top two athletes in each event at this month’s African Championships, held in Marrakech, qualified for the continental squad.

However, according to rules laid out by global body the IAAF, the Confederation of African Athletics could only include one athlete from each country.

SA athletes in African team:

Men: Wayde van Niekerk (400m/4x400m), Ruan de Vries (110mH), Cornel Fredericks (400mH), Zarck Visser (long jump), Khotso Mokoena (triple jump), Cheyne Rahme (pole vault), Chris Harmse (hammer throw), Orazio Cremona (shot put), Victor Hogan (discus throw).

Women: Wenda Nel (400mH), Rikenette Steenkamp (100mH), Sunette Viljoen (javelin throw)
