On top of bagging a medal and having bragging rights for four years, local athletes can also expect to be rewarded with cash. According to thesouthafrican.com, athletes receive the following amounts:
Gold – R500 000
Silver – R250 000
Bronze – R100 000
The money is further split with coaches, who are paid R100 000 of the total prize money from gold, R50 000 for silver and R20 000 for bronze. Meanwhile, teams have to divide the cash among themselves.
Singapore offers the highest prize money for gold medals, gifting their athletes with R10.2 million, Indonesian gold medallists get R5.2 million and Azerbaijans receive R3.4 million. Australia and Canada offer the lowest amounts at R204 000.
