The Lions announced on Thursday at the Johannesburg stadium that No 8 Warren Whiteley will be captaining the team.

It will for the third consecutive Super Rugby season when he again takes the reigns for 2016.

The experienced Whiteley said he welcomed the responsibility of the captaincy bestowed upon him, taking back the leadership from flank Jaco Kriel who lead the side during the Currie Cup campaign

“It is a big honour to again lead the Lions in the Super Rugby competition,” said Whiteley.

“I take the task very seriously while I also enjoy making decisions on and off the field,” he said.

Whiteley played in all the Lions’ 16 games last year and was the leading players as far as tackles executed with 227 and he believed the Lions have grown as a team.

“While I think nothing has changed it becomes easier,” he said.

“Also because we’ve got such a great core of leaders around me,” Whitely said.

He has represented the Lions 52 times in Super Rugby.

Coach Johan Ackermann said it was an obvious choice as it builds continuity to have the same captain as the last two years.

*Like many South Africans the Lions have also been touched by the enormous need for water in certain areas of South Africa and decided to get actively involved to help relieve the longstanding problem for clean drinking water.

Ray de Vries of Water Shortage South Africa said ‘never sold, never bought, never sponsored, only donated by South Africans for South Africans’, as the Lions squad help to load the water on a truck on Thursday.

This has become their motto and the Lions said they were proud to be associated with the organisation to help those in need of something that gets taken for granted every day.

Rudolf Straeuli, the Lions CEO, said once they asked the Lions supporters to help and donate water, support had been flooding in.

“We thank Super Group for supplying us with a 35-ton truck and also Round Table Florida 21 for the 15 000 liters they collected in their community.

“We will be taking close to 20 000 liters of water to Winburg, where clean water is still a major concern,” he said.
