The 32-year-old hooker re-signed with the union last week but, ironically, still strode out for the Blue Bulls during the opening round rendering him fairly well versed in the strategies employed by the team he’ll play against on Saturday.
“It’s one of those hazards you try to deal with,” shrugged Bulls coach Pine Pienaar yesterday.
“You’d expect Willie to share some of our strategies with the Lions. After all, two weeks ago he was still a valued member of our team. We’ll naturally need to adapt some of our lineout calls but when you think of it, most sides know nowadays what to expect from each other.”
Pienaar believes the veteran will add much value to the men from Doornfontein’s overall product.
“He’s a superb scrummager and that will really add potency but in the end we’re more preoccupied with getting our own things in order,” he noted.
His direct opponent will be Bongi Mbonambi, one of two changes made to the starting line-up and just reward for a solid outing against Griquas last week.
Pienaar also rotated his scrumhalves, Ruan Snyman and Rudy Paige, imploring them to get their feeds to the set-piece right.
“It’s a new rule we need to adapt to.
“It cost us a yellow card last week so it’s definitely been a focus point in training.”
