Boks count the cost of victory

Both reserve flyhalf Johan Goosen and lock Bakkies Botha left the field injured, but it’s especially Goosen whose prognosis doesn’t look too rosy.

Bok coach Heyneke Meyer said he will have to consult his medical team first before he can make a call.

“I am really worried about Goosen’s knee, but we took Bakkies off as a precaution as his Achilles flared up again,” he said.

The Bok coach however said he was over the moon although the Boks didn’t really kick on when they had Wales at 28-9 against the ropes at half-time.

“I think we were awesome after we had a lot of disruptions during the week and fielded one or two new combinations,” he said. “It was almost too easy, while I have to add we have great respect for Wales.”

“Everyone out there could see what a great player Fourie (Du Preez) is while I thought Jan (Serfontein) was awesome on defence. Lood (De Jager) was excellent after replacing Bakkies,” said Meyer.

“I am blessed to be able to coach such a great bunch of players, but we know next week could even be more difficult,” he said.

Bok skipper Victor Matfield said he was thrilled with their first-half performance.

“I thought we were very clinical in that first 40,” he said. “But we also know there were a lot of mistakes in the second half while Wales ensured more ball, but we will take it step by step.”
