Lions include stalwarts for Kings clash

Lions coach Johan Ackermann named a 23-man side to face the Southern Kings at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Saturday.

The side includes several stalwarts that were rested for last weekend’s warm-up match against the NWU-Pukke in Kempton Park.

Springbok lock Franco van der Merwe, Julian Redelinghuys, Jaco Kriel, Warren Whiteley, Michael Bondesio, Marnitz Boshoff and Andries Coetzee will all start against the Kings.

Willie Wepener has been promoted to the starting XV, with Robbie Coetzee providing cover from the bench.

In the backline, Lionel Mapoe comes in at outside centre at the expense of JW Jonker, while Chrysander Botha will also receive a starting berth on wing.

Mapoe will partner with Puma centre Stefan Watermeyer, who impressed in the Lions’ 52-14 victory over the students.

Marnitz Boshoff, who was one of the standout players for the Lions in 2013, will form a halfback combination with Michael Bondesio.
