The Golden Lions Rugby Union on Tuesday announced that they have retained their coach Johan Ackermann while the bulk of their senior squad will also stay on for 2017 and beyond.

It included Ackermann’s management staff of assistant coach Swys de Bruin, technical and defence coach JP Ferreira and conditioning coach Ivor ‘Cash’ van Rooyen.

“The GLRU has negotiated long term contract extensions with most of their senior players to compliment the contract extensions of their senior coaching staff, the union said.

“As the process of extending more players is currently underway, the following players (list at the bottom) can be confirmed to have committed for 2017 and longer”

Rudolf Straeuli, CEO of the GLRU, said they are excited by the times lying ahead for the union, with UJ also qualifying to host one of the semifinals of the Varsity Cup.

“The GLRU also has a strong contingent of young players in their player pool.

“We are very excited about the University of Johannesburg who will host the Varsity Cup semi-final, the UJ Young Guns who qualified for the final and Wits who has been promoted to the Varsity Cup for 2017,” said Straeuli.
