Wanderers send Delfos packing

Wanderers sent out a strong warning to the teams in the Premier A Division last weekend with a 107-run victory over S&E Delfos.

Delfos had come into the match full of confidence after their first victory of the season in the opening weekend of the Gauteng Cricket Board Premier Leagues.

Wanderers posted 241 after their 50 overs, a score that proved too big for the visitors. Openers Matthew Feinstein (32) and Brandon Buckley (11) led the pack steadily before Reece Williams gatecrashed the party, sending Buckley packing early.

Williams became a vital component of the Delfos attacking line-up, completing his 10 overs with figures of 4/40. But the home side gave a brave display with the boost of the combination of Peter Vermeulen (55) and Feinstein, who enjoyed a third-wicket partnership of 50 runs.

But the lower order failed to maintain the same sort of momentum with wickets falling at regular intervals.

The team that had showed a sense of urgency as they chased victory, but the home side’s canny bowling was too good for them. Donovan Scholtz and Paul Hawken, who finished on 4/23 and 3/39 respectively, led the attack and dismantled the visitors’ batting with ease.

Apart from opener Shazaad Khan (21), who became Scholtz’s first victim, none of his team-mates in the top order managed to score more than 10 runs.

It was a hard-fought knock by Shane Blaauw who was dismissed by Buckley after smashing 34 off just 19 deliveries, that gave the visitors a glimmer of hope. But after he was sent back to the pavilion, the innings folded, with the side being bowled out for 134.

While Wanderers are still savouring their first victory of the season, Delfos will now concentrate on restrategising in preparation for their next Premier League match.
