Zimbabwe still in the game

LIVE: The ICC Cricket World Cup began in earnest for South Africa on Sunday as they took to the field for their opening Pool B game against Zimbabwe in Hamilton. Stay tuned for updates as the match unfolds.

With 10 overs to go in the match Zimbabwe fiery resistance has died down somewhat as the match draws a conclusion.

With the partnerships between Hamilton Masakadza and Chamu Chibhabha and then Masakadza and Brendan Taylor broken the momentum has swung back into South Africa’s favour.

At the 40 over mark Zimbabwe were 234/5and still require 106 off 60 balls  if they wish to be successful in their chase of 340.

Imran Tahir struck in the 33rd over to dismiss Masakadza for 80 off 74 balls, the right-hander offering the simplest of catches to Hashim Amla after a leading edge while Morne Morkel claimed the wicket of Taylor, who added 40, with the first ball after drinks to peg Zimbabwe back at 214/4.

JP Duminy, who added a century in South Africa’s innings, then accounted for Sean Williams in the 38th over to make it 218/5.

At the moment Craig Ervine and captain Elton Chigumbura are at the crease as Zimbabwe look to stay in the hunt.

The last time these two sides met in a World Cup match was back in 1999 with Zimbabwe claiming  a 48-run win over South Africa.
