This ahead of the competition’s kickoff the end of February.
From 2006 to 20013 Janse van Rensburg, 30, made 79 appearances for the Golden Lions, from 2008 to 20013 in 52 games in Super Rugby, while he played in 54 games for Bayonne in France since 2013 before signing for the Stormers late last year.
He also played three matches on loan for the Sharks in 2013 when the Lions didn’t play Super Rugby.
Janse van Rensburg will add big value on experience to the Stormers frontrow who already have Springboks Frans Malherbe and Vincent Koch in their ranks, while Oli Kebble, JP Smith and Alistair Vermaak will add to the depth.
New Stormers head coach Robbie Fleck named 38 players in his training group who will travel to Wilderness on Tuesday and return to Cape Town on Saturday.
The camp will see the squad begin preparations in earnest for the new Super Rugby season, and Fleck is looking forward to building on the work the team have already put in over the off-season.
“Traditionally we have been to Hermanus which has been really good for us, but we decided to visit Wilderness and George this year for a change of environment.
“The players worked incredibly hard over November and December and had a good break, so we are looking forward to picking up where we left off last year in terms of the way we want to play and our conditioning.
“The purpose of the camp is to build on our philosophy of our playing style and our culture,” said Fleck.
Players not attending the camp due to commitments with other teams are flank Schalk Burger (Suntory Sungoliath, Japan)), lock Eben Etzebeth (NTT-Docomo Red Hurricanes, Japan), centre Juan de Jongh (Springbok Sevens), fullback Cheslin Kolbe (Springbok Sevens) and wing Cornal Hendricks (Springbok Sevens).
Among the big-name players they have lost include No 8 Duane Vermeulen (Toulon), centre Jean de Villiers (Leicester Tigers) and lock Ruan Botha (Sharks), but together with Janse van Rensburg they have signed lock Pieter-Steph du Toit from the Sharks and wing Cornal Hendricks from the Cheetahs.
The team will be holding an open day for the public on Thursday at Outeniqua Park in George, with a signing session at 5pm.
